I have one reel with a spool like yours. I removed the spool from the reel and put it in a drill. Placed the drill in a vise and turned it on, locking the button. Filed it lightly to remove the bur and finished with crocus cloth on a Popsicle stick.
I have a Shiamano Sedone 2500 Fd that I have dropped two times. On one side of the spool it has some grooves on it and it catches my 4 or 6 pound Mr. Crappie line when I throw out. I can only throw out like 10-15 yards, being that I am a bank fisher I would like to throw out farther than that! Is it better that I try to file down the grooves or should I buy a spare spool? Thanks

same principle only I used steel wool of different grades till I got mine smooth
I do mine by hand no drill used
as a side note I check and smoothin mine every year
If you can't smooth it out check ebay - sometimes you can find really good deals on spools but make sure to check the spec sheets on them - some model spools if their the same number can be used on other models. That was one thing that disappointed me about Shimano that they stopped including an extra spool when you bought a reel.
