Maybe if I reference the thread it will help

Totally stir crazy with the rain so I poured some jigs. Then I combed Crappie.com and read the 10 reasons why I cant fish by Special K. It was painfully true but I did learn. I got to reading more about my Helix 5 and someone mentioned about downloading maps from Navionics for one year and after that you have to pay. Can someone explain that to me and what I should do. I have had it about 6 months.
Thanks

Here is info Wayne P. posted in another forum ... :
Very easy with Navionics, just go to their website, click on Web App and you can view the current maps for Nautical Charts (Navionics data) and Sonar Charts (user generated data). That is updated daily and is what you would get when purchasing a Navionics card and updating it.
All Navionics products include a year of Freshest Data Updates.
For Navionics, the best card for the Helix is Navionics+. All three ways to get those maps will give you both Nautical Charts and Sonar Charts.
The coverage is for inland lakes and the Gold coverage (coastal and major rivers).
The original Navionics+ card is 2GB and has no maps. You choose what locations to download to the map card from anywhere in the US and Canada. It is discontinued but some retailers still have copies. MSRP $179
The current Navionics+ is Preloaded 16 GB with all the maps for the US and Canada including the waters covered by the Gold version. MSRP $199
If you already own a map card by most any company, there is the Navionics Update card which is 2GB and has no maps. To use it, you active it with your card so it becomes the Navionics+ version. MSRP $99
I'll add just a little ... The Freshest Data Updates (included with the card purchase) allows you to update your card as many times as you want for the 1st year ... After that your card stays at the detail level of your last active update (unless you elect to purchase another year of Freshest Data Updates for $99) ...

this confuses me ....if the lakes you currently fish are already on the navionics why would you need to update it ?
sum kawl me tha outlaw ketchn whales
Navionics offers Nautical charts ...which is mapping Navionics boats actually mapped ...
Navionics also offers Sonar Charts ...which is user generated Sonar logs that are sent in the Navionics and built into more accurate map data ... These are updated daily by Navionics ...depending on the Sonar logs that have been sent to Navionics and rendered into the Sonar Charts downloadable updates ...
