grizzlyjig.com has Mr. Crappie and Vicious line pretty cheap.

I used Bass Pro Excel for years and it WAS good line. My three new bulk spools may just go in the trash as it's not the same old stuff I am use to. The old excel was just like clear blue Stren. I tried some Cabelas pro line and its wirey and stiff just the the bass pro stuff. Anyone have a recommendation for decent cheap mono? Don't really want to hear how I should switch to braid. Thanks.

STREN .
Trilene easy cast in 1000 yard spools. It doesn't exactly fill the bill for the cheap part. But I try to get mine on sale, and I check Berkley's website for rebates. Them and crappie nibbles.Try to use the coupons. I try to make sure my line never gets to hot like in the trunk of a car in summer, keep the twist out of it letting it spool out behind the boat with nothing on the end and reel it back on occasional. Helps it last longer and sorta helps justify the extra change. I use Blakemore reel magic sometimes as it gets older to extend it a little. I try different stuff but usually come back.
Flint I hear you on the Excel line - I called and asked why they changed it and got the we were trying to make it better!! NOT I've gone back to Berkley XL, have a buddy who's son works at Dicks sporting goods and he gets a discount so he gets it for me.
Here's how to tell when Trilene or Stren line was made:
The date code on berkley and stren spools of line. The code is listed in very small print directly below the diameter of the line. It is displayed in a 4 dash sequence.
Example...C - 4 - 10 - 1
Date of MFG: March 4th, 2010 First shift
The letter C represents the month it was manufactured. In this case March. The number 4 represents the day of the month it was made. The number 10 signifies the year in which it was manufactured. The last number signifies the shift in which it was produced.
Mr crappie line seems to fit the bill fot me. I now can get it at walmart so very convenient and affordable.

Flint, I still have several rolls of Excel that are decades old, and still good line. Thanks for telling me that the new stuff isn't. I have spools of line from many different brands, but if I had to replace them ... I'd go with Vicious Panfish in the 1/4# spools. I'm currently using it in 6# test on most of my casting rods.
... cp
I've had a 1/4 lb spool of Vicious around 5 yrs now. Keep it in a closet in a box. Very good line. I only fish with one rod so it lasts a long time.
