Default Welcome surprise while fishing for crappie and gills

    Keepit100outdoors....

8.5.15 fishing for panfish in Presque Isle Bay behind the convention center (Lake Erie, Erie, PA) i was using strictly night crawlers as bait.
i only got to fish for about 2 hours before the bugs started to get thick but i was able to catch 1 10" yellow perch, 1 slab blue gill, 1 baby rock bass
and this guy... whom now resides in my freezer!

How do you prepare and cook your White Bass? I have never had one that I would describe as "good eating." Maybe I'm doing it wrong...

You probably didn't cut off the red meat from the skin side of the fillets. That meat does tend to give the fillet a stronger "fishy" taste.

I ate them as a kid, skin on & all .... and I didn't really mind the taste. Hybrid Stripers are pretty much the same, and I've eaten them skin on, too. Bass ... pretty much the same effect. I just don't bother keeping any of them, for myself, and just keep Crappie to eat. Those I mostly filet, but occasionally will clean them skin on, especially if I'm going to fry them up right after cleaning them and I'm the only one that's going to eat them. If I'm going to give them to family or friends, I filet them (& check them closely for any bones left).

I cut all the red meat out, just couldn't handle the taste of the meat.

They are a lot like our White Perch. With them I have found if you only keep the meat that is above the lateral line it is much sweeter.

My dad and his friend used to fish for white bass all the time. Theyd catch coolers full each trip. I went a few times, dont remember red meat when cleaning them.

    They are delicious eating.

I love getting into a school of white bass. The action can be faster than a school of crappie.

The small ones are better. Also try them during the cooler months. And cut the red out.

cook them the same way i do all panfish, egg wash, breading, deep fry. its important when you skin the white bass to remove as much of the red meat near the skin as possible thats the part that gives the white bass that fishy taste.
