How to fish points

Where do crappie set up on points? Right on top. Off to the side where the drop is steeper? What's the best approach to fishing this structure?

May depend on current ... any current will put fish on the down current side.
May depend on cover ... cover not only provides an ambush point, safety from predatory fish, & shade, but it also acts as a current break.

IMHO ... the "best" way to fish this point, is to determine "where" on the point the fish are (or are most likely to be) and then pick the method that will allow you to put your bait within their depth range and at a speed of movement that fits the mood they're in or what the water temps dictate.

You should also be aware of any thermocline that may be present in your waters. Water temps will be the coolest & dissolved oxygen content will be the lowest (that fish can survive in) at the depth of the thermocline. At whatever depth the baitfish are running, the fish will likely be close to that same depth or slightly below. Neither fish nor baitfish can survive below the thermocline for very long.

What CP said. I use a simple technique to locate fish without a sonar unit. Cast out as far as you can, slowly reel line back in, stop every crank and wait for the bobber to settle, crank again, wait, repeat until your at shore. Shift your cast over 10 feet and try again. Shift over another 10' and try again. Repeat even when you find fish. The first fish you caught was an outside edge, you haven't found the middle of the school yet. When you run out of fish, back up to the middle and fish.

This time of year in slack water any irregularity , wood ,dropoff, channel break, boulder ect , could be holding fish.
