A starter kit is a crap shoot IMO but... Here are a few with decent quality
    .2.3.5mm Pro Airbrush 7cc Cup W/ TC-848 Quad-Head Compressor
    MASTER AIRBRUSH KIT G22,G25,E91,TC20,CRE COLORS

I started with the one from US art supply and still use the compressor and the guns are all for primer and some overcoat colrs. Best thing is to get a really good gun. Some of the lower end guns will just frustrate you beyond belief.

In retrospect, I wish I had started with this system HP-CS .35mm Eclipse Airbrush TC20T Comp 12 Colors All Acces but I had a limited budget. I did finally get a good badger 360 and an Iwata Kustom and although they are overkill, they can do anything I want as well as many things waaay beyond my skill level.

Iwata Revolution series, Iwata Eclipse series or Badger Krome series. Plan on $80-$120 for just the airbrush. That will give you trouble free use for a long time. The cheap ones are utter trash. Honestly, everything else is there to support the airbrush and IMO not as important.

Ask MRdux on the Kentucky board or ScottV on the Sippi board

A big portion of my living is made with an airbrush. You save nothing by buying cheap airbrushes.

For cranks I use a Badger Renegade Velocity with a fine needle and nozzle. I'm not trying to get fine detail but can get pretty much as fine as I need for acrylics I use on cranks. I use a $600 Iwata Custom Micron with lacquers for my taxidermy work most of the time.

I get my Createx airbrush paint on-line or at Hobby Lobby for cranks.

I have a Bostitch pancake compressor I could use for airbrushing but I use my 220Volt 2-stage 50 gallon unit in the shop. Make sure you have a water separator between the compressor and brush.

You will want to paint any blank cranks with opaque white first. Heavy coat and let it dry good before colors.

Mrdux can you give any advice on fume hoods, for removing the fumes as you are spraying?

I rarely have to use one painting cranks because I use acrylic paints and use such small amounts of paint. I can paint a dozen cranks and probably not use 1/2 teaspoon of paint.

I use a large squirrel cage blower system to vent my paint room when painting fish or doing finish work with lacquers.

Yep, Lots of folks see what the capital outlay is to start pulling cranks and then painting them and the prices somebody like ScottV charges look better all the time.
