Default Feeding a pet crappie in a aquarium

I just put a 9 inch crappie in my 30 gallon aquarium. Just wondering if they will eat any store bought food(pellets, shrimp, etc.) instead of minnows?

Yes. They will eat just about anything you feed it. 9" crappie will destroy any scenery you have in that tank.

Are you fattening him up until he gets to be 15 inches? Sounds like he has a date with Lake Crisco in the future.

I would think some thing could be learned from throwing a few minnows in the tank and watching it feed.

Bluegils will eat all the tropical fish in a tank,I bet your crappie would love a little culinary variation from time to time....

Your best luck will be with live bait fish. Rosy's, goldfish, minnows.....figure what's cheapest and go from there. Maybe even seine a local creek.

I used to have crappies. I fed them worms for the most part, because they were free. Id toss a few extra minnows from fishing in the tank also.

Are crappie hard to keep in a tank? And do they foul up the water bad? How often do you have to change the water?

Not any worse than any other fish as long as you dont over stock. One 9in per 30 gal is about right. I wouldnt put anything bigger in less than a 55.
