If you have a version of Windows working, I wouldn't change it until this new version has been tested and re-issued several times with patches.
I got a notice that Windows 10 is coming out and you can get a free upgrade. Anyone know anything about this. I have Windows 7 SP1.
Thanks

Being certified in all that sort of stuff (unfortunately) the below is a quoted statement directly from several different "Microsoft" certification courses I have had to take.....
"It is better to do a fresh installation than it is to perform an update from one operating system to the next...."
Hope that helps you out.
One of the reasons behind this is that each operating system is built with specific "minimum" set of system requirements. Windows 7 requirements might have been less than 10. There are several other reasons but I'll save you all the technical crap and just say it isn't a good idea.

Unless you've got 6 GB of RAM, stay away from Windows 10... These is a symbiotic relationship between the hardware manufacturers and Microsoft. Newer versions of Windows need newer hardware and more memory to function properly. Otherwise why buy new hardware? You might also discover too late that your older installed software, your printer and your scanner don't work with Windows 10 and you need to buy new ones

I keep getting the Windows 10 popup and was interested in finding out more about this if I should really get it. I really like all the computer gizmos thingies like smart phones and store cards where we shop and really like Amazon prime for shopping and movies and like and use the search engines like Google and Bing.
I came across this video hoping to get a better read on if I should download Windows 10 and let me say as someone greatly interested in liberty it raised the hair on the back of my neck making me start to think about backing off of using some of these neat computer gizmos. The video explained how with Windows 10 comes with a already loaded key logger and the ability to turn on your computer microphone to record what is said around the computer and save all this along with any file or PDF's you may have downloaded all without you ever knowing about this.

I sure would like to hear from others about any more secure operating systems they are using other than Microsoft stuff. I'm currently running Firefox but now more interested how the Unix system works.

I was going to jump on this as soon as it became available. However, I read somewhere that the free version comes with a lot of advertising popups that you can't turn off. I don't know if this is true or not but it wouldn't surprise me if it was true.

Like I have said previously, it is never a good idea to upgrade.
Another thing directly from Microsoft is that they only recommend upgrading from the previous model or OS. In other words, going from windows 8.x to windows 10 will have less of a negative impact and experience than going from windows 7 to windows 10.
Working for the federal government, I can tell you that although we are looking at windows 10, we went with windows 8 on all of our new devices. Some of our sister agencies requested their new devices come with windows 7. The simple reason is that there is already security parameters set in place for those devices and we don't have to reinvent the wheel so to speak. With new operating systems, you normally don't know about a vulnerability before it is too late and something happens. Then a patch is put out to band aid the fix.
Another key component is that you have to ensure you have the required amount of storage space, CPU, and RAM. It is never a good idea to go with the minimum requirements.
One last thing, If your previous device (say a windows 7 device) is not touch screen compatible, you will be missing out on a lot of features designed specifically for touch screens.
We have a big learning curve with the 100 plus people I deal with on a daily basis. Going from windows 7 to windows 8 (or 10 for that matter) is a huge undertaking. Those of us in the computer industry feel like it is a great operating system designed to be similar to smart phone style devices however it lacks in its ability to become a high end computing device for normal corporate operations. Many of my business industry friends are reporting that (for now) their company is staying with windows 7.
The change in the OS model from more of a desktop device to a mobile type device is going to have a giant impact on the business world. Many companies will need to switch over a ton of architecture to truly utilize the effectiveness of the mobile platforms designed today.
And thus ends the tech lessons for today.... I would rather be fishing
If what the guest on that video Katherine Albrecht said about Windows 10 was half true then I would say yes Windows 10 should be a great system for all government employees so the taxpayers could make sure the government employees weren't wasting time on porn sites or signing up on Ashley Madison while at work. Every key stroke and file they ever accessed could easily be retrieved and checked. But I don't think every key stroke ever pushed by private citizens using Windows 10 should surreptitiously be saved somewhere so the government snoops could check on everyone's private lives whenever they wanted.
