    Default Automatic Hook Set

Is a mechanical automatic hook set rod holder legal in Missouri? Bought one but now I'm not sure I'm even able to use it.

Well I know the answer. I contacted MDC via e-mail as ripnlips advised me to. The response I received is "Automatic hook-set devices are allowed in Missouri."
The response was from a Fisheries Program Specialist out of the MDC in Jefferson City. I'm going to keep the response in my tackle box, just in case there is a question.

Let's see a picture of it. My uncle use to make some spring loaded ones that pushed down in the dirt and would set when a catfish would take off with the line. Was always fun waiting for one to go off. We would cast jigs around the pond for bluegill and bass and then we would go running back to it when it would go off with a big catfish.

Pretty sure he is making sure he catches more of the non-targetted species.

Size: 64.2 KB This is it. Pull down on the line, sets off the trigger by pulling it down, and the spring lifts the rod tip up setting the hook. Richards right I'm looking to catch more of those non-targeted species while hoping for those targeted species.

I'd put a heavier spring on it. that way when a fish (gar, carp, drum) takes the bait, the rod springs back so hard it flips that trophy right in the boat for you!

Years ago on the river, we would set bank lines tied to willow trees. We would bend the willows and set them like a snare. when a fish would take off with the line, it would trip the willow snare and set the hook. Big cats would shake the heck out of those willows.

My husband likes to use small circle hooks for crappie. I tried it but went back the gold hooks. I do use circle hooks for bait fishing for whatever wants to bite. When the fish grabs and swims off they hook automatically. They work great on limb lines for catfish.
