I am in the market to purchase a shallow water anchor. Have a few question regarding the purchase.
1) are they as advertised
2) what brand is the best
3) what are the disadvantages if any
4) installation easy
5) pros vs cons

Well how deep is "shallow" for you? If you want cheap, just get a big chain and let it off the back of the boat
The type of bottom is a big factor in anchoring. Are you in sand, mud or hard bottom rock or compacted sand or flooded trees. Each type of bottom can make anchoring hard. I use a danforth or fluke anchor. Most of the bottom here is sand and mud. If anchoring in hard sand a shot of chain on the anchor will help. In rock or trees a grapple anchor will hold better. Hope this helps.
I think the op is referring to a anchor pin................With a little research you can make your own from fiberglass round stock at a fraction of the cost of the ones you can buy.....
Three can keep a secret................If two of them are dead! (Benjamin Franklin)
If your talking about power poles and Talons....cost is the main disadvantage.

A coffee can,Eye bolt, quikrete and a good rope!!makes a good one!! Make two one for each end of the boat!!

I have toyed with the idea of making something that was a loop on the back of the boat that you just push a rod threw maybe put a thumb screw in it to keep it from moving around
