    Default Do crappie jump?

.... Well, not jump but slap or roll the top of the water when chasing bait, if so, how common is it?

I see it quite often down here. Especially when they are chasing the mosquito fish.

I don't know. A couple of weeks ago I was casting into a submerged tree and the bait went on the opposite side of the branch than wanted. So I was just reeled it back very quickly. When the bait got to the top of the branch what appeared to be a white crappie was chasing the bait all the way until I could see the side of the fish and it went back down. The fish was coming up so forcefully it made a splash when it changed direction back down. I swear the fish about went over the top of the branch with the bait.

While fishing at night on underwater lights, I see crappie chasing shad to the top and splashing the top of the water. They occasionally take shad from the surface. It doesn't happen every night, but some nights when they are real agressive, you might see it 2 or 3 times a night. I've also saw them do other crazy things on these lights... like swim sideways (like a flounder), so I'm not sure if this is normal behavior, or if they just act like this on the lights.

I think any fish can jump, but many don't for some reason.

For example, carp jump all the time but not when they're hooked.

Pulled one from 20' deep that thought it was a bass when it reached the surface last weekend. DP

I talked with a guy fishing from the bank a few years ago, one of the older fella's I see there from time to time. He was telling me about the fish making the water look like it was boiling when they were chasing shad in reach from the bank. He cast a small crankbait he had on and caught a good Largemouth, no surprise. But the next two casts he was surprised to catch a slab crappie on each cast. I have had smaller ones jump out of the water but the bigger ones mostly turn and fight real hard. I guess you never know what will hit when they are "in the jumps".

I never really noticed. Will have to pay more attention in the future.
