I think it's underpowered to start with. Probably be OK for driving to work/shopping, but I wouldn't put a 4cyl under a towing load of ~2000lbs & expect much (or expect it to survive for long).

2010-2012 Terrain's with power height adjustment system for front seats ... recalled for adjustment bolt's tendency to come loose, allowing seat to freely move up/down. System should not be used until dealer has checked/fixed problem.

Back when I was newly married and had kids I had little extra spending money. I managed to buy a new 1974 Steury fiberglass Bass Boat with a 40 HP Johnson on it. I don't know what it weighed but it was heavier than the 16.5 tracker with a 55 Yamaha that I have now.
I pulled it with a 1969 Volskwagen Squareback for 3 years and that old VW just chugged right along with it's 80 hp air cooled engine. Granted there were a couple of steep ramps I was not sure I would get up, but I did.
When I could afford something bigger I sold the VW, but still have fond memories of it.
I would not recommend that as an ideal arrangement but it worked as would your Terrain. You just might not be very happy with it except when you pull up to the gas pump.

I have an Equinox with a 3.4 V6 and it'll pull my boat just fine. Research the tow capacity on anything you plan to use for towing. If it's lower than 3500 lbs forget it.
