    Default Tilt/Trim?

Trying to add fluid to my unit but can not get it in. My unit is a 1990 Mercury. It has a drain at the bottom and a release valve on the side at the bottom. How can I get the fluid to go in and stay? It slants back so it is hard to keep it in the unit. I have my boat leveled. Thanks for your help.

Your 1990 looks the same as my 1994 motor.
Raise the motor as high as it will go, there is a place for the
safety latch for the motor to rest on when motor is high as it will go.
Remove the plug and add fluid until it runs out reservoir, reinstall plug
and put the safety latch back where it belong, then let your motor down.
    Hope this help.

The large plug that you see when looking at the back of boat
is the one you remove to put the fluid in the reservoir only when
the motor is raised as high as you can get it. If you don't have
any fluid in the reservoir use a screwdriver to back off the release
plug and have someone raise the motor by hand as far as it will go,
tighten realease screw, remove reservoir plug and put fluid in until
it runs out. Reinstall plug and let motor down. if low fluid was the
    problem it should be Ok.
