I use the activated charcoal and filter packs at Miejer they probably have them at walmart also just never looked. I used a galvanized water tank 100 gal. threaded a pump into the bottom, with a livewell screen on the inside of tank. and run a tube up to top and have a plastic square tupperwear kinda thing screwed into inside top rail. Drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom run the hose in top and BOOM minnow tank.

My water is pumped into the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket filled with Poly stuffing and crushed lump charcoal then back into the tank from the top of the bucket.

Filters are one place that I would practice overkill.

With home made filter the pillow stuffing/pollyfil from Walmart is cheap and does a good job.

scratch pads work good too. anything that water can flow threw and collect particles. i stuff some in a plastic bottle, run hose in top, cut hole in side and hang over tank. the falling water gives enough oxygen i dont need to run a bubbler. you have to start out with just a few minnows, till the filter gets dirty and starts to work correctly. if you dump in a load with fresh filter they will die. its not just particles that it cleans but more importantly the ammonia. after a week or so, a half doz. gills will have it working good enough to pour more in. i can keep 40- 4" gills in my plastic barrel for months with only a bucket of water exchange every 2 weeks. never clean the filter completely either or you will have to start over. i always leave one or two pads in the container and rotate new in. if your going to keep tiny minnows the tank will need to be kept cool too, along with more attention to ph. tiny crappie minnows are very fragile.

no sun on tank either or it will be green by noon. lol
