    Default Shad spawn

    Craig,
When do the shad start spawning? Could I expect to find 2" - 3" shad by the middle of June or is that to early? Thanks.

The shad were on the banks spawning the first week of May at Lovewell.

    sah,

Shad will spawn in Kansas between the first part of May through the middle of June.

Depending on what lake you are talking about mid-June will probably be a bit early for 3-inch shad. There's a big difference between a 2" and a 3" shad if you are catching them for bait!

I sample my reservoirs for shad during mid-August each year. Young of the year shad during this mid-August sample can vary from 1.5 inches to 5 inches depending on the timing of the spawn. The bulk of the shad during these samples are usually just a little over 3-inches.

Sah, we caught whites surfacing last weekend at Eldo that had fresh spawned shad in their mouths. They were still clear colored and little. Saw whites and wipers surfacing again yesterday morning and I'm sure they were feeding on the same thing.

    Default Shad

Schools of shad are beginning to be common at El Dorado. Saw a couple of different sizes today. Smaller shad down around the dam and larger fish (such as those in the picture) up north.
