i don't ice fish (not cold enough) but i use plastics 100% of the time for panfish.
Have never tried them
Gave it shot, but no luck
Use them sometimes with OK results
They are a main part of my arsenal for crappie
Hey crappie Maniacs........I notice the lack of info exchange in regards to using plastics or for that matter specific rigging techniques. Am I missing that somewhere?
We use alot of plastics, both competetively and recreationally with phenominal results. With so many styles and convertible baits the options for presentations are endless and the results can be amazing.
The ability to match the hatch and match the color almost identically can make a huge difference, especially in tough bite situations.....impregnated as all these are with anisce scent amkes them grab and hold on.........

fishing isn't a sport, it's a way of life.
a motto i live by :D
go dawgs!!
The beauty of matching the hatch with plastics is they work year round...The ability to trigger strikes by changing colors or styles or using glow offerings in low light conditions is a wonderful thing.......Big slabs like those irresistable twitching , fluttering plastics........and with the anisce scent, they grab and don't let go....LOBY

Loby, I agree with what you say, for crappies, the ability to change color or style of body can make or break a day of fishing. An example of this was last winter thru the ice, my son and I were fishing for crappie and we had a school under us and we tried all kinds of jigs and body combos and I finally started catching them on a Maki plastic polli and saved the day, if it wasn't for experimenting with color and styles I don't think we would have had as succesful day as we did.

Guess I should have put it in here.
Try these for some big slabbers. They worked very well for me this year!:D

allways used micro plastics when I ice fished for bluegill and crappi on Lake Geneva in WI. seemed to produce bigger fish in the gin clear water. Purple and green were two of my favorite colors
I have never used plastics. What kind of plastics and what jigs should I match them up with?
I used alot of the Custom Jigs and Spin brand the names were I think demons iin black/orange purple/green chart/green the other one was the Rat Finkie in assorted colors. The only ice fishing equipment I have left is my jig and spoons and im going to try them for crappi and blue gill here in Mo.
I used long and thin plastic in assorted colors they looked like legs on a tube.
GOOD lUCK
Crappiekid24...
Sometimes small is the way to go in the wintertime, especially icefishing.However...there are times when the fish prefer a larger profile bait.
So with that said...for ice jigs....try going with a large variety of large, and small icejigs.Same for plain hooks, and keep a wide variety of different colored jigheads, both in 1/32 oz,and 1/64 oz. sizes.Variety is important. In my tackle box...having too much is a good thing!:D
Plastics-
When I use plastics,I try and imitate 2 types of baits.A minnow,or an insect.
Match the size jigs to the size plastic.
This type of micro jighead I use for minnow type bait presentations.
This type jighead is used for fishing crappie tubes, which also immitate a minnow.
This style micro gliderjighead I use mostly for insect immitating plastics.
Sometimes you just fish the jigs alone, but sometimes they just get real finnicky, and most times...I can get them to hit an insect plastic just as well.Plastics are so much cheaper than live bait.A scoop of crappie minnows,or Rosy reds...can go as much as 3.00 dollars a scoop, and I can get 10 plastic baits for 2.50 and catch anywhere's from 15-25 fish per piece of plastic, before having to replace the plastic. What has more value?
Now plastics should be easier to attach to them too.
