That's a loaded question! Totally depends on what bait I am using and the size of the fish I am targeting. We don't have the crappies like you fellas have down south. a 14" crappie is something to brag about up here (got my first over 14" last month through the ice!), so we have to use small hooks so the 9"ers can get it in their mouth!

    For 1.5" tubes I like a 1/16 or 1/32 round head w/ barb and a #4 hook.
For 1" gulp minnows (my favorite ice out bait) I like a 1/64 ball head w/o collar and a #6 hook.
For solid bodied baits I use a 1/16-1/8oz ball head w/barb and a #2 hook.

Not going to list the other hundred different lures I use, but you get the point. I have all sorts of different style heads with different hooks to use depending on which bait I am throwing.

i was just asking in general. Not meaning it to be techinal. I understand you use different jig heads sizes for different styles. I use up to 3/8oz heads but day in and day out i use 1/16. but i dont understand why the small hook sizes. i would think small hook rip out alot easier and bigger hook get much better hook set.

Our fish typically can't get a #1 hook into their mouth on a regular basis. Most crappies here are 7-10" with a few in the 12" mark and a rare one 14"+. If I were targeting 12-16" fish I'd use a #1 or #2 hook for sure!

I use 1/16 with #2 hooks for white bass, and quite often I'll get into a school of crappie. I'll get 5 or 6 hits in a row and miss them all, then finally catch a crappie. I'll set that rod down and grab a rod with a #4 hook and land fish after fish out of the same school until they are gone, then back with the #2 for white bass. I use the same tubes for both, just different hook sizes.
