Yes, if you troll. If you mostly single-pole then I would say no. Also if I were buying new I would go ahead and get the link over the pilot, just an upgrade in the system even if you don't hook it to the depth finder.
you could get a quick connect bracket and swap the cable drive back when you want to single-pole

I have had both and personally think the link is worth the extra money. I single pole 90% if the time.

I don't think the ipilot link is compatible with the 1197. Get a Terrova with ipilot and you will be happy.

It IS compatable with the 1197. I have that setup. It's worth the extra money. I fish with my kids and by myself so it's really worth the money!

What is the difference between the Ipilot and Ipilot link? I heard it was not compatable with the 998SI is that true?

There are others on here that will give you the real answer, with link the TM and HB FF's all can talk to each other (Ethernet). ie you can sit at the consol with TM deployed highlight a waypoint and tell it to take you there.

The link is compatible with the 998. If u look on the humminbird site it list compatible units. The biggest advantage to the link is being about to run contour lines with the lakemaster chip. Check your area and see if lakemaster covers the lakes u fish.

The links main thing is the contours followed on the Lakemaster charts but it will go to waypoints and stores more tracks and such too.
If I were buying new it would be the Link whether or not I was running a bird depth finder.
