Smile I think I need to gointo the fruitcake business

That, my friends, is the recipe handed down from my great-grandmother, Theresa Lenz. Her daughter, my grandma, used to make a dozen big ones right after Thanksgiving and she would wrap the ones intended for the adults in a linen towel soaked in wine. By Christmas, it was pretty potent. No wonder we all had such a good time at Grandma's!

I'll try to paste in the recipe later. I'm the last member of the family who still bakes it and I'm happy to share.

BTW, I'm going to experiment with the recipe to create a cookie bar for a baking contest next week. Doug will, of course, be my guinea pig. I'll let you how it turns out.

Don - won't you share with your fishing buddy Killer?

Red face That was not spiked, Don

Although the molasses seemed a little zippier than usual.
    It's all in your head.
    Here's the recipe (I hope)

    GRANDMA GOLDRICK'S FRUIT CAKE

    2 Cups brown sugar
    1 Cup butter,softened
    1 1/2 tsp. salt
    1 Cup dark molasses
1 Cup sour milk (add 1/2 tsp cream of tartar to regular milk)
    1 Cup each of raisins,
currants (I substitute dried cranberries or golden raisins),
chopped figs, chopped dates, and chopped nuts
    1/2 Cup chopped candied cherries
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. ground cloves
    1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
    2 tsp. cinnamon
    1 tsp. alspice
    4-6 Cups all purpose flour

Cream first three ingredients, add spices, soda and
baking powder. Stir well. Add fruit and nuts,
add flour a little at a time. Makes a very stiff batter.
Pour into generously greased and floured loaf pans or foil muffin cups.
Garnish top with whole candied cherries and pecan halves.
Bake at 300 degrees for 1 1/2- 2 hours for large loaves,
1 1/4 hours for small loaves and
about an hour for muffins. Test with toothpick.

    Enjoy! - Roberta

Well it out on my email list now so somewhere it will get archived for the millenium or something. Wonder if any will float backthis way.

Wowsers may have to post my rice crispie treat recipe. Just dump peanut butter and chocolate bits into basic recipe after melting the marshmellows cut back on butter a little to compensate for p. butter. And you got to be quick or fudge could happen.
