Fried Crappie.... "The real thing".
Make sure you are not fishing with your bait below the crappie. They will feed at their level or above. Try either starting near the bottom or at a depth you think is as shallow as they should be. Like in the summer the fish will be in water say 25' deep, but they may be only 12' down.
Anyway start at one extreme or the other and move it after a short time with out a bite. Once you get to the right depth you must keep contact with the feel of you weight or jig. Keep the feel, but also watch your line for any movement you are not doing. He may take you minnow say and go up a little with it and all you will feel is a loss of weight feeling or see your line move sideways.
Anyway concentrate on feel and sight and the depth.
On my web site I have a beginner type How To Page (for jigs, but should help with any type bait) and here is a link if you want to check it out...

What lake are you fishing ?? Just got back from Weiss, catching around 30/day ... "bumping bottom" at 12ft deep, around wood along channel edges.
