    Default Auto Inflating PFD?

I am considering one of the Auto Inflating PFDs that are available. I was curious if anyone has used one and if so, what are your thoughts on them?

Clint, I have a Mustang that inflates upon immersion or manual, it provides 35 lbs of buoyancy. Once you've had it on for a few minutes you don't even know it's there, I don't know how many times I've worn it to the truck when taking the boat out. I don't swim very well and fish alone most of the time so I hope this will help me survive if I go in. That being said most of my fishing is done in the winter and if I go in and can't get back in the boat I'll be easier to find. Well worth the money IMHO.

They do work, my nephew fell in with his auto inflating BassPro model, which inflated just like it should have. Watch for them to be marked down around Black Friday. I bought my Cabelas Guardian series for $89 last year, that's marked down from $169.

Actually a civilian `spin off ` from the military versions that came into use during the early 1980`s. A military review of causes of fatalities AFTER successful egress/ ejections found the #1 cause of death was "failure / inability to actuate the CO2 life preserver inflation system". The military had previously tried without success to develop and adopt similar equipment during the Viet Nam war, but was unable to "fool proof it, that version being ultra sensitive to rain storms. By adding a durable and robust encapsulated microchip inside, with widely separated sensors, the ONLY thing that will set these things off is being COMPLETELY submerged for a full 1 second...you can sprinkle water on it, pee on it, mist it, think they even subjected 1 to a fire hose at full tilt, and "NADDA". Fully submerge it for that 1 second and it works faster than you can manually inflate it with a 99.998 success rate...while I was in (7.5 yrs) read of at least a dozen USN, USMC and USAF pilots and aircrew found and recovered injured and / or unconscious who`s auto inflating life preservers saved their lives without a doubt...we also began installing a just approved gulletine parachute shroud line cutter device using the same exact sensor to get the pilot free from his parachute canopy after splashing in and avoiding possible deadly entanglements...

The first one I bought was put in a compartment and I didn't wear it at all and one day much later when I was going with someone else and intended to use it I found it had inflated sometime. I rearmed it and started using it all the time. I really like it in the winter time over heavy clothing because it is not noticed at all. It did inflate one day I hadn't been wearing it and had left it lying in the bottom of the boat on a hot summer day.

    I really like mine.
