The crappie gods smiled on me today
Since I have plans this weekend, I loaded up and headed to my 2nd choice water today after work. We've had a stretch of great weather here, made it up to around *80 this afternoon and I just knew that the fish would be feeling as good as I was. Got on the water around 5 and fished until dark, 7pm. Wind laid down nicely around 6 and the surface was dimpled all over with fish surfacing.
As soon as I got the fish finder hooked up, I had a group of fish at around 12' in 15' of water; I expected them to be perch. I still had on the paddle tail minnow from my last trip so I dropped it over and got a solid take; up comes a nice 11" crappie. Took another from that same group with the green/blue body/white tail 2" Crappie Stinger.
I trolled around slowly, dragging the paddle tail minnow and this Stinger, getting hits on the Stinger regularly but none on the paddle tail. Switched it out to a BG Baby shad in Patriot color on a 1/16 head and started getting action there, too. The Stinger was on a 1/32 head so as I was trolling, I had one lure shallow and one deeper, no idea what depth it was running. I spent about 2 hours trolling till I spotted fish, then would stop and jig up a few and repeat. I landed 2 nice perch about 11", one nice 'gill and 12+ crappie running from 10-12". I did not keep any tonight; didn't even bring the cooler. That's probably why I had such good action.
All in all, a great day to be on the water and it was a giant relief to boat some calico's after having such an unproductive summer of crappie fishing.
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.
