    Default mushy crappie fillets?

A man told me that crappie aren't much good to eat in the fall and winter because their fillets are mushy. Is there any truth to this?

Never heard that being the case in the winter. I have seen a few soft fillets in summer and fall, but all you have to do is soak them in very cold water in the refrigerator over night and they will be nice and firm the next day. Plus, I have never noticed the firmness of a fillet changing the taste of a fillet. Of course this is just my opinion.
It is not about the equipment you have to use,
It is about how you use the equipment you have. :D

    nope, no truth whatsoever.
Methinks he was just trying to keep you off his honey hole!

Crappie filets are good all year. Like slab says, just keep 'em cold in the summer.

In late spring thru late fall, all my fish go on ice instead of in the livewell. No mushy issues there.

The process of thawing frozen filets has a bearing on their quality. Generally the slower they thaw the bestest they is.
Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.

I do most of my fishing during the colder months, I have a constantly growing list of folks wanting fresh fish.
