Anyone know what kind of worms these are (Fiddle worms)? We use to get them on the side the mountain just past Huntsville on 72. Cut a small sapling and use a dull saw to saw it and make vibrations and they would come up and start crawling . Some were 8 to 10 inches long and very tough. Thanks

I think you are maybe getting what we call night crawlers, they do that.
yes those are fiddle worms and nothing like a night crawler, i have fiddled some that were a foot long
Went to the music store and ask if they had any worms that could fiddle. The girl looked at me like I didn't know what I was talking about. Go figure.

Might be the earthworm, or the asian jumping worm. If you post a picture i would be able to more possibly identify the species.
They are called fiddle worms because old timers used to fiddle them up.They are also called grunt worms, earth worms,nightcrawlers,wigglers...........it's just a tecnique to grt them to come to the surface, instead of having to dig for them.
I got a friend that took a broom handle that was cut off and sharpened with notches in the side of the stick. He stuck it in the ground and took a big bolt and rubbed it up and down the stick. And if I had not seen it with my own eyes I would not have believed how it made the worms come out of the ground. We had a bucket of night crawlers in just a little while. I think they call this (fiddling for worms). If you don't believe me check it out on youtube.
That is a neat thing for sure. Saw an old timer do it with a chainsaw running on the ground.
