I use a Minn-Kota maximizer but do not know if they still make it, you maybe able to find a used one.

Hang an anchor about 5 ft down, or a 5-gallon bucket, or buy a drift sock.

They don't make the maximize any more but they do show up on E-bay every once in a while.

Hey Pat I have a 16.5 Gheenoe as well with a 46lb thrust trolling motor. My Gheenoe has a custom build inboard jet drive so I don't have any outboard motor to keep the back end of the boat from sliding sideways. To stop that I use a drift bag I got from Cabelas. I think it's their medium one. And it works fine for controlling the boat's speed when trolling from treetop to treetop. But I'm not sure what kind of trolling you are wanting to do. I also used it to troll crank baits with and I needed all the 46lbs thrust, without the bag, to maintain a 1.6 to 1.7 mph speed. So a little more info on how you're using it, what the problem is, or what you're wanting to do might help some of us to answer better.
