Depends on how many you want to pull. Some go all the way out to 18 ft. Your goal should be to get 3-4 ft of separation of your lines. I normally run a 6 1/2 angled toward back of boat, a 8 more out to the side and a 12 straight out from the side.

I ran 6 rods tonite, 2 of each in 8, 10, and 12 footers. the 12's go 90* , the 10's get a little angle back and the lines not quite as far back as the 12's, and the 8's are angled back more yet, and a bit shorter than the 10's. The front to back separation helps keep things in order, and it's way cool, and a bit crazy, when you troll thru a school and the 8's go down, and a few seconds later, the 10's go and then the 12's. and you're by yourself. Fished 3 hours tonight, caught about 40 or more til the sun went behind the trees and then it was over like someone threw a switch. 10 or 11 would have been dinner but the live well stayed dry this trip. Several times I had fish on 2 or more rods. Didn't have time to reset the rods, just unhook fish and set them in the holders til I answered all the downed rods, then reset them all. I had a stinking BALL!!!

Bet that was a Chinese fire drill, fun but hectic.
    GO BIG ORANGE !

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.
