I've been fishing shallow water (less than 4') and sometimes catch fish in 2-3' much of the day. At first I thought, why not use 1/16 oz to cast further and cover more area. But then I went down to 1/32 oz and discovered that the distance wasn't all that much greater than using 1/16.
Braid with a 2' of 4-6 lb test mono leader sinks pretty well even with a 1/32 oz jighead tied on and unless I'm using a curly tail (which I don't anymore after discovering the design in a previous thread), it's important to me to be able to retrieve from very slow to a darting retrieve, keeping the lure at a depth I chose.
The only advantages of using 1/16oz I can see is casting into a wind, using curl tail grubs or being able to run a lure faster.
1/64 oz doesn't seem that much different to me than 1/32. The plastic is what sinks the bait along with the tiny amount of lead.
What size hook on your 1/64? I've been using #4 and #6 with 1/32 oz and killing them! I get them on Ebay.
I very rarely use 1/32 I almost always use 1/16 and sometimes 1/8. id never go smaller than 1/32 but that's me. Ive only cought over 200 crappie this year.
Happy Hooken.....
I seldom ever use anything but 1/8 with a #2 hook, but then I use bigger plastics than most. In deeper water I go to 1/4 at times. tHe bigger plastic slows rate of fall. I verticle jig most of the time with 11 or 12' Ozark jig pole. I catch thousands every year and never use light / small jigs.
