    Default Hillsdale 5/23

Fished HD yesterday from noon to 5 p.m. Caught about 15 crappie and one small largemouth bass. 6 keeper crappie. 2 were good size.

I couldn't quite put a pattern on them. We caught most (black crappie) in 15 fow, but our two largest (white crappie) came from a brush pile in 5 fow. A week ago, I was catching a lot in 30 fow, but couldn't get a bite there yesterday.

Caught everything with chartreuse road runners. Tried white, but didn't work so well. Also tried a couple other spinner baits, but no luck.

I'm still trying to get the hang of this fishing business. Anyone want to tell me why I had luck in some areas, but not others?

I'm taking two of my kids and a couple neighbor kids camping at HD this weekend. We plan to do a lot of fishing from my boat. For the kids, I'd be most interested in quantity catch and release of anything (not just crappie). Any tips?

I've never caught a black crappie at HD in all my years of fishing there. How many blacks would you say you caught compared to whites? Just curious.

Thanks for the report! You can always try the Wade Access Branch, I usually do well there. Good luck and tight lines

Also be on the look out for these at HD. Back in 2007 I caught one blacknose crappie on two consecutive outings there but both were short and I haven't seen another since then. They were both caught under the Little Bull Bridge.

If you are looking for fun fish to catch, especially for youngsters, the white bass are still running along the dam. It is best when there is a bit of wind blowing into the dam, but vary the depth
you are fishing and you are sure to catch some.
The shore fisherman are doing well, we typically drag cranks along the face in 15-20 feet of water.
    Good luck.
