Unable to decide. So is the HB898 worth the $400 more than the 798? Any and all input and information will be greatly appreciated.

Yep, there is a good one in the classifieds. When it comes to FF scenes bigger is always better, especially if you are splitting the side image.

Like Rees said ...screen real estate is very important especially when it comes to splitting the screen...

    Also...

Here's an "un-talked-about" image size phenomenon in SI discussions...
Structure image ratio size ...SI vs 2d

    In my 1197:
A brushpile that shows as the size of a golfball on the 2d screen...shows as the size of a quarter in the SI screen...

    In a 798:
That very same brushpile would show as the size of a quarter on the 2d screen...but show as the size of a peanut in the SI screen...

Structure images are roughly 1/4 size in SI as to what you are used to seeing in 2d...And if you "split" the screen... Structure images are smaller even still...

Here is a 3-way split view from my 1197 ...notice how small the brushpile shows in the SI view as compared to the 2d and DI view...

Buy the biggest screen you can afford...Unless you want to look at "peanut sized" brushpiles...

I put my 798 on a boat that had Lowrance 7 inch screen and the pic on his was twice as big as mine, had to enlarge screen one time to be the size of his,his did not need to be enlarge to get a good pic of crappies, so I would say get as big as you can afford, I want to get a bigger one someday ,maybe a second hand one

I've got a 898 and love it. Wished I had bought a 998 for the bigger screen.

If I'm not mistaken, you also get the 800hz sonar freq. I love my 798, but if a person can afford bigger, do it.

Bigger the better. I have a 898, I love it, wish I would have gotten the 998. Hope to get a 1198. Can't wait till they get a 2098.

RCC has a good point that I forgot about....

The 798 cannot show the 800kHz frequency because it does not have the internal circuitry to cipher it...

I run a 1198 and if I am finding smaller pieces of structure and want to enlarge it I just decrease the width of my side imaging or use one side only. If you cannot swing the extra for the 898HD the 798si will do a very good job. I ran a 797c2si for 6 years until I saved my nickels and dimes for my 1198. If going the 898 I would strongly recommend the HD models the veiwabilty in bright sunlight is no comparison.
