has anyone done this with any success?

Jaspy, I have a depth indicator that is mounted inside the hull. I was somewhat leary weather it would work so I mounted it temporary first, a big glob of vasoline and then taped it down to see how it would work. After a month it work great so I mixed up some epoxy and glued it in place, thats been two years ago and still works fine. Hope this helps...
I have had an inexpensive one for 5 years.went thru a couple different ones.they work fine.only trouble comes at higher speeds.at low speeds no problems
How fast are we talking.? Usually if they are off at speed there is a angle problem. When your boat is on plane the transducer has to be parallel to the water to read depth correctly. Mine works at my top end of 41 and it s just the el cheapo that came on my boat.
I have never had any problem. I did like Wigglewart idea of vasoline as a test. Sometimes I just made sure there was a little water in the back of boat and it worked. I would make sure I was as far to the back of boat as I could be. Hope it works for you.
Went out yesterday to table rock and once I'm on plain I loose bottom no matter what speed. Think I will wait for a new GPS unit before I try the hull
