Loosing crappie

Hey everyone I'm new to the crappie fishing forum.
I fish in north central arkansas in lake Barnett, here lately "today" an the last week or so I have been pitching a 1/32oz jig with a smoke colored curly tail jig at the bank an retrieving it really slow. Wen I get a bite I pull slowly to set the hook an I can feel the crappie on for about 3-5 seconds an boom they pop off. My fishing pole is a 8ft B-M brush cutter it's medium light action. Anything I can do to keep from losing them? Dif hooks, jig heads ect?? I've always caught them this way with no problem until this year. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest setting the hook instead of pulling slowly. An 8 ft pole should keep you from setting the hook too hard. Can't hurt to try.

Are you using good quality hooks that are sharp? I bet your using awful small hooks, I like #2 hooks. Test the point of your hooks on your thumb nail, if it does'nt grab when point is draw across it is dull.

Check your hooks and make sure their sharp. Plus bend the hook point down alittle.

Il give it a try on setting the hook a little harder, there new hooks but a cheaper brand. Thanks! Anymore ideas guys that I might could try?

I like sickle hooks, and find them sharper. I get a lot of fish in the roof of the mouth. 1/32 on a #6 hook and staying connected.

I like to try and rip the lips right off of the crappies, and try to keep a steady tight line while reeling them in also. They call crappies paper lips, but I have yet to loose any by setting the hook too hard.
