Water temp readings at different depths.

I fished Lake Prince in Suffolk VA yesterday for crappie and only caught 5 small ones so I played around and took water depth readings at various depths. I had a pool thermometer tied to some line which was marked at 10', 15', & 20'. (deepest holes are around 30-35 feet) When I first got on the lake the surface temp was 82.5 and surpisingly the temp at 10, 15, & 20 feet was only 81 degrees. Later in the day the surface temp warmed up to 88 but the lower depths stayed at 81. I really thought that the temp at 10' would be in the mid 70's and even cooler in the deeper water, I was really surprised to see it 81 degrees 20' deep. Where is this so called thermolcline I read of?

A lake that is only 30-35 feet deep may never get a thermocline.

My lake does not have a thermocline. After the last front went through they moved from the 7ft or less flats to 16ft to 20 ft a foot off the bottom.The lake is 10 miles long but max depth is 25ft.Very little of the 25ft. Mostly 14ft to 23ft of the deeper water in the lake.
