    While most of the time we can get by with long leaders on our floating fly line fly outfits to get the fly deeper, there are times when a sinking or a sink tip fly line is needed to reach deeper fish (if you don't want to pick up the spinning rod that day :D).This article recommends using a full sinking slow sink fly line so that there is a straight line to the fly in order to detect light strikes better and to pick up more fish in the water column on a slower fly drop rather than using a floating sink tip where the line is not straight on to the fly and harder to detect light bites (but there are slow sink sink tip lines). I think it is largely a matter of what the conditions require so a fast sink tip may not be bad if the fly needs to get down to the fish deeper in the water column quickly. The floating sink tip also is easier to cast than a full sink. Might be advantageous to have both kinds of fly lines on hand (maybe on spare spools or extra fly outfits) as conditions warrant.
