We finally got the canoe out on the Stillwater this morning. River was muddy and still a little high. We found several pockets of bluegill and other sunfish holding in pools around undercut roots. They were mostly hitting mealworms. Some guys on the bank were hauling in nice channels, one right after another.

The last spot we hit had an undercut bank with lots of big tree roots. I caught a small gill , but kept having something hit my casting bubble, so I took that off and just threw a tiny midge fly pattern, letting it drift a little in the current. Bam! I caught my first smallmouth bass.It was maybe 1 pound , but he gave me a tussle..

On our way back to the canoe ramp. we had a good sized bass jump right next to the boat. We had some trouble getting back to the parking area because of the current, but we'll be back.- Roberta
