Default Fish over, at or under the thermocline?

I have heard people telling me to fish right at the thermocline for best results but when I purchased a crappie dvd a week ago it says to fish above the thermocline. Does this even matter when fishing crappie? What are your thoughts on this topic?

It matters in the summer when the water get too hot. They will be at or right above the thermocline, its not something you need to worry about this time of year.

I would think they would be above the thermocline
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

Default Fish over, at or under the thermocline?

They are above the thermocline, their is very little dissolved oxygen below. Therefore all baitfish and predators suspend above it. During the summer you can test this with minnows, try putting one below the thermocline and it will often soon die.

Fish will be in or above the thermocline! Crappie see and feed best up, so start shallower and work your way down. You can turn the sensitivity up on most units and see the thermocline. I also turn on fish id to see the fish symbols and depths. Also try areas with current, usually upstream feeder creeks or rivers to aviod thermocline.

You've found your answer. Not all waters develop a thermocline, but it is a summer pattern, nonetheless.

Thermoclines form in summer and winter as cooling or warming water is pushed down!
