Hand struck coins like this are centuries old. The Spanish hand struck gold & silver coins from new world metal. It is difficult to tell from the photo but at least one of the 'horses" in the coat-of-arms is actually a unicorn. The lettering surrounding the coat-of-arms is equally obscure but likely is Latin. You might try to make a rubbing of the script to see if it is any clearer. Is the metal silver or gold? I suggest your friend not clean them too aggressively - it could affect value.
It dosen't look struck to me. It looks casted. I think its a reproduction souviner coin but kind of hard to tell from a photo.
