Sounds like a gar bite to me.
I was just reading another thread when i was reminded that about about 2 years ago i was out with my father and grandfather and we always hook minnows behind the eyes and for some reason the crappie were biting the minnows leaving nothing but the head. i have never experienced anything like this before and i haven't had it happen again since then. Does anyone have an idea of why they all were doing this? we even switched locations across the lake and they were still feeding like that? believe it or not we started hooking them in the tail and started catching them again
Sounds like a gar bite to me.

I always hook minnows through the eye, but have never had crappie bite like you described. I know plenty of times a warmouth will leave just a head on the hook.
Depending on what size hook was used, Bluegill will do this. EB

Doesn't sound like crappie to me.
it very well could have been another species but i just didnt understand them doing it in another location. i use 2/0 eagle hook i believe.
