Default Question about chains for trolling

    Hey guys,
I have purchased a 14' chain (3/8") that I plan on using on my boat when spider rigging. I have never used a chain before so I need a little help with getting set up. My boat is 20' long (fiberglass) so it is pretty heavy. Should I cut my chain in half and put a 7' chain out on both sides of the rear of my boat or put the whole chain out on one side of the boat? I plan to have plenty of rope so I can adjust the speed of the troll. Seems to me if I put the chain only on one side of the boat, the boat would setting at an angle during the drift.

    Thanks for the advice.

you can do the two rope deal with a 7 foot piece out each side, but that sho is a lot of trouble.. i anchor my rope on either side of the boat and go around my motor on the other side. keeps it pretty straight....

Yep cut it in half and drag off both sides. With a 3/8 size you most likely gonna want 2 more 5 foot sections to attach to them when is real bad. Keep in mind the rope length as well, longer the rope more resistance.

Scrap yard out my way had some nice barge chain this week. Inch thick links. I scored about 15 links worth. Used 3 links of Tuesday and it worked out great. I'm going to make a couple of different lengths for different conditions. I'm sure they have more if anyone is interested. AJ scrap in Union City.
