Default J&D Slab Madness at Oconee Oct 27, 2012

Another good day on the water with good people. The weather man tried to scare us off, but mother nature let us fish the whole day without the predicted high winds. Overcast skies and mild air temps made the day even better. Water temps ranged 68-72 with a very light stain to clear condition. Good fish were being caught in the backs of the major creeks as well as at the mouths of those creeks and the larger coves all the way up both arms of Oconee. This caused some head scratching on where to get the biggest fish on Saturday. Of the 15 teams competing, spiderrigging out performed any other method on Saturday using minnow rigs and jig minnow combo's in water depths averaging 25 feet. The fish were up high in the morning and dropped down to structure later in the day. Thanks to Rozier's Custom Jigs for the sample packs. Very nice jigs that I know for a fact caught fish on Saturday. Check them out on Facebook.

Congrats to the team of Rod Wall and Kent Driscoll who had the best weight of the day for overall and for Big Fish with a 7 fish limit weighing 12.34 lbs and Big Fish weighing 2.20 lbs. They also had a second Big Fish that also weighed 2.20 lbs! Nice job by the BnM prostaff team that did not prefish at all. They spiderrigged jig/minnow combos in timber and over deeper brush piles to catch their winning fish.

Congrats also to the second place team of Robert Sellers and Tommy Ryals with a 7 fish limit weighing 11.92 lbs and a big fish of 2.07 lbs. They also spiderrigged minnows over deep brush, but did pull out the jig poles and singlepoled for a little while too. Third place was close with 11.39 lbs and a Big Fish of 2.08 lbs. The Male/Female team of Tommy & Christy Sellers spiderrigged also using minnow/jig combos targeting suspended fish early and brushpiles later in the day. Fourth place was the Adult/Youth team of Randy Temples and Jonathan Sidle who had a 7 fish limit weighing 10.59 lbs and also had a Big Fish weighing 2.07 lbs. Randy and Jonathan spiderrigged standing wood and shot docks to find their weigh-in fish. Fifth place weighed in 10.56 lbs by Terry Jones and Scott Sprayberry with a Big Fish of 1.99 lbs. The top 5 weights were all over 10 lbs for 7 fish and the top 5 Big Fish all weighed over 2 lbs. Oconee is still producing good quality fish. A lot of the smaller fish caught during the tournament and during prefishing were healthy thick fish. Oconee should continue to produce the quality slabs in the future too. A little rain would really help like most of the South.

Look forward to seeing everyone again at Oconee Nov 24, 2012 for the Last Chance qualifier before the Classic Swap Up Challenge in December. Don't forget to get your raffle tickets from Jamie or myself to sell for our classic. You can buy them too! Contact us for details.
