If there the 5" model. I would say for fish other then Crappie. LOL
But you can jig them straight down. Or as a swim bait like they are made for.
Cast them out and let them sink down. and swim them back to the boat.

You can get smaller ones that will work for crappie, but these big ones are really better for walleye and their relatives. You can troll them or swim them back to the boat after a cast. Be forwarned, a couple of guys on the forum have lost nice stripers when their lines slipped off the eye ,which isn't always closed tightly. It's not an issue if you use snaps.
In-Fisherman has done a couple of articles on swim baits, but mostly regarding walleye fishing. - Roberta

5" would work great for these big bass out here in California. I wouldn't use them for crappie. Now a 2" or 3" would work great for crappie. Use colors that match what the crappie are feeding on.

crappiencali, is right on... I use the 5" trout pattern when I am lookin for bass. I have been trying MATZUO PRISM SHAD 2" (aka Blaze) No crappie yet, but have cought a few bass and white bass.

I used them in about 2 1/2" size last winter in deeper water tight lining or drop shotting. Used them the same as jigs. Not a lot of fish but some of the larger. Doesn't hurt to have one out when double jigging with a couple of poles.
