View Full Version : More Than Crappie!

Went out this morning for a couple of hours to do some crappie fishing. Fishing in general wasn't too bad. Got 4 small crappie, 1 bg and a 1 lb. LM, from shore.

However, that is not what this report is about! Hooked into something big about an hour ago. Something REALLY big. Fought that bad boy on my 2# test UL rig for about 15 - 20 minutes, before getting a brief glimpse of it near the shore line. Shortly after this brief visual, the hook pulled out - thankfully I might add - I was getting pretty pooped! At least my arm was. That 7' B n' M rod was fully doubled over for most of the fight.

A good sized carp she was. Hooked in the mouth too! Using a 1/16 oz. jig head and a 1 1/2" Panfish Assassin. (Go figure!) Stripped out my line several times, but thankfully didn't spool me. I kept the drag faily tight for the line test I was using. I would guess it to be about 12 - 15 pounds. Gold color. Fatty too!

Boy, is my casting arm sore! "Aleve" to the rescue!

Nice to add some excitement some of the time! You got the fun of the fight without having to handle the slimy rascal.

That is the best thing about crappie fishing. You can catch any fish in the lake. I have caught just about every spiecies of fresh water fish on a crappie jig or minnow setup. Even some rather large snapping turtles and softshells. You just never know.

Sure got your blood pumping did'nt it? We catch all kinds of fish on jigs with some too big to land. I have seen Buffalo, Carp, Gar , Catfish, Bass, and Grinnel tear up yo stuff using jigs.

A little excitement with trying to land a mobster fish on ultralite is a fun thing. The old adage "Big fish eat little fish" is true. Sometimes those monster fish just want a night time snack. LOL

No fillet pics? :Rofl

They're fun to catch. I used to have a pond that had some bigguns' in it, once a year in the spring, we'd all go buy one of those kids Snoopy poles, and see who could catch a carp large-enough to rip the guts out of the reel. They're surprisingly tough.
