Years ago my wife and I rented one up in Minnesota for a week. As I recall we were instructed to tie up on shore and not anchor out in the lake overnite.
We will be renting a houseboat on lake marion in SC in july. Anyone have any tips? Should we anchor in the lake at nite or find a cove?I'm planning on making one of my depth finders portable so i can attach it to the HB to hopefully find some fish.Any more ideas?

Sounds like fun, I wish I could talk my wife into a vacation like this. I think it is a good idea to take your depth finder with you. Enjoy your vacation...

We do a week or so each spring in a houseboat on L. Shasta, Ca. A GRAND hoot indeed! We tie to trees or stakes on shore each night as it is a mountain lake with very steep sides generally. We have rigged lights and fished from the "water-end", attracting "plankton", then shad, then crappie, trout or salmon, of which only the crappie are legal after dark.
The boats are equiped with sounders, but your own (what you are used to) is far better.

Whats it cost to rent a house boat for a week.
LOTS! But generally the off-season is cheaper.
We rented a 71' a couple of years ago on Dale Hollow. They instructed us to tie off to shore also. The reason that was, it's against the law to anchor at night in the main lake.

Tim ..... depends on what lake, marina, time of year, and size of houseboat. Locally (Ky), they run around $1000/3-4days ... 3day weekend, or 4day weekday stay. And that's for the smallest ones. But, also depending on how many people are in your group, that can divide up to about equal to the cost of a cabin or room per couple. Even the smaller ones can usually sleep 6-8 comfortably.Originally Posted by tim
