    Default Boat Floors

Why don't boat builders make their floors out of alumiun instead of pressed wood? It's lighter and lasts forever with no rotting. What do you think?

Lowe has started to with their Stinger series of boats. I wish it would catch on in the rest of the industry, especially the aluminum manufacturers since they are already tooled to do the fabrication at the plant.

    Wood is cheaper.

Shouldn't be too many wood floors being installed these days. Most of the aluminum boats have aluminum floors and pretty much all the major glass boat builders are using all composite materials.

If your floor lasts, no reason to go boat shopping every 5 yrs.

I just traded off a 93 Sylvan Pro Select that still had solid floors. You just have to take care of your stuff.
It lasted 3 hours at the dealers and it was sold.

Wood is generally used because it has less flex and results in a more quiet floor. With an aluminum floor, you have to add more bracing, which reduces the weight factor some.

Its all about what the market dictates. Aluminum is much more expensive and time consuming to install. Wood is cheap. People want cheap when they buy a boat. If one manufacturer installs aluminum which cost more, they will sell fewer boats than the manufacturer that is installing wood and charging less money for the finished product.
Its business 101. What are people willing to pay and what is it they desire....
