    Default Nighttime Summer Crappie Action

Got out on the Big G on Friday night with my son who will be turning 18 on Saturday. I have only been living in AL for a couple of years and have had a hard time figuring out the crappie patterns down here. I think all of the hard work is starting to pay off. Fish were holding in about 22 feet of water and were about 16 feet down. We had better luck on live bait than with jigs. They would bite on both but the bite was much slower on jigs. We fished from about 9:30 until 2:00 when we finally ran out of bait. I was surprised at how aggressive the bite was. Typically a crappie will get hooked in the top of the mouth or upper lip. That wasn't the case on Friday as they were literally inhaling the hook, bait and all. I would say 8 out of 10 fish were hooked in the gullet. No real giants but plenty of them. We kept 29 and threw back several that were under 10 inches. The best part of the whole trip was getting to spend it with my son on his last week as a "kid". I can't think of a better way to send him off into the big world of adulthood...
