Drop Shotting
Anyone drop shotting for crappie? I'm an avid DS fan for smallmouth & LM bass, but have never used it for crappie. Just wondering.

Crappie fishing was where "drop-shooting" was pioneered. The Kentucky Lake rig was thought up in the time before widespread use of fish finders. You are able to locate brush with the sinker below your hooks keeping you in contact with the cover but not hanging in it.Originally Posted by Crestliner08

Drop shot is a dynamite way to catch crappie in the summer months for me... when everybody quits after the spring run, find some cover lying on the bottom and use enough drop line to keep your hook free of the cover, I never seem to run out of crappie in the hotter months... Not quite as exciting but certainly productive.

I do it when the water is cold and the fish are holding near the bottom in deep brush. It can be very productive when the conditions are right.

I fished Saturday in one of my crappie holes on KY Lake. We weren't catching any crappie on the jigs so I decided to try for some gills. I downsized with a bluegill bug I tie and drop shot rig. I caught 4 or 5 small crappie right off. I never did catch any keeper size crappie but did manage to eek out several nice gills. Ended up with 29 nice thick ones about 8 inches long.

I started drop shotting last year in the summer and cant wait to experiment this year. I like the stand out hooks from blakemore the best. I just got the new VMC drop shot hooks with the swivel on the hook hope to try them soon. Do any of you use live bait on them or just plastics.
