Default Blackest crappie Ive ever seen

My son and I went over to the club to wet a line tonight and I caught the blackest crappie I have ever seen in Ohio. My father in law always says when they turn black the are in full spawn. I caught 4 crappie in the 8 to 10 inch range and 6 decent gills but we put the all back. check this one out

Im pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that they spend so much time shallow when they spawn and are exposed to constant sun light. If you ever notice when you take a fish out of deep water in the winter or summer and they are almost colorless, after a while in the livewell or even in the icecest they "turn green" again.

The black ones are the males, and that is for sure their full spawn coloration. Courtin' tuxedo is the best description there is.
