LCPA-West has helped defeat another bad bill being offer by the infamous Wild Crayfish Task Force (short for take our public waters away from us and sell us a lease even if its public land). They were pushing for the tagging of all crayfish traps and putting the Atchafalaya Basin off limits between dusk til dawn. LCPA-west argued that tags would only asisst the outlaws as all they have to do is pop off your tag and put theirs then legally the trap is theirs. This is what has happened to the crabbers in saltwater and caused much conflict. The reason for the off-limits is that some leases being sold are now giving the leesee's the domain over all game and aquatic life, which they have no right to do, and they say the crayfishermen are catching all their frogs at night. This bill would have covered the entire state and was very vague, so it is now delayed for the next 2 years. There are many groups such as these WCTF springing up in an effort to control the public right to hunt and fish an area they don't own. They also want to set a season on crayfishing even though this depends on the waterflow that only the Corp of Eng. can do and if the water doesn't rise there will be no crayfish no matter what area you lease and is the reason crayfishermen need free access.
