What good is this rig?

What do you use this for? I came across it on basspro. I'm real new to crappie fishing, is this just a minnow rig? Please help. If someone uses it can you explain how & in what situations?

fishing minnows vertically with a heavy weight on the end
- but I've never known anybody who admitted
to using those store-bought versions with the metal "spreaders"...
Do some searches on "Kentucky rig" and it'll all make sense.

Wow, I'm surprised - I tried to search for it, and didn't come up with
much either. Maybe someone else will jump in here I'd rather someone
who fishes like this elaborate - I'm just a troller

I regret to say that I have tried these elaborate things. Instead of a weight on the bottom, I rigged it with another jig on the bottom. This gave me a 3 jig rig, but couldn't get a bite with it at all and it tangled up real bad. After several hours, I snatched it off, tied 3 jigs on my line and started catching fish. I think it scared the fish off. I was vertical jigging, and it might work trolling--I don't know 'bout that.

The vertical rigs work just fine - like anything else, it is when, where and how. Sometimes this IS the way to load the boat - used in conjunction with a good sonar unit, it is a deadly technique. I tie my own rigs, I only buy store bought stuff when I need to.

Yep.. I use em. They are great for fishing the deeper waters in the winter time with MINNERS. I can't say much for the jigs, cuz I'm just a learner with those. The idea is to present the bait at different depths when you aren't sure exactly how deep they are.
The spring arms prevent the minnow from tangling around the line, kinda like the other thread about the lines getting tangled around the split shot.
I usually put one of the bait caster weights (egg shaped) on the bottom, size dependent on the winds/current. I don't cast with them though, as that would probably cause a mess.
It's also great for bottom bumpin' to search for structure.
I'm sure alot of the folks on here make thier own, like Tampa Jim.

Of course, I'm a girl... so I gotta be different. :p

I use them with minnows and the work well. I wouldn't use them for jigs though.

I don't buy the ones listed at bass pro. You can pick them up at KY Lake at any store 3 for $1.75 to $1.99 with weights and hooks. They have ones for cats and different setups or weights.

I saw some of those in my grandpa's tacklebox once. They've been around for decades but I've never really seen anyone use them. Someone must because they're still selling them.
