Missed the hooded crane but did get to see 19 whooping cranes one visit and 9 the next time. Saw many thousands of sandhill cranes.

    cool sighting!

This past winter, a friend of mine spotted a snow owl on the ice at Wolf Lake in Hammond...I thought that was pretty cool too.

I see cranes and herons all the time, but I've never seen a hooded crane...they're pretty neat looking.
Roaming the banks of the Kankakee River and anywhere else fish might lurk.

Very rare indeed. But it is also out of its normal range Siberia, South Korea, Japan and China. Must of been a glitch in its GPS.

I saw a documentory on PBS WTIU Bloomington on how the Goose Pond FWA came into being. Seems like over many years, different farmers tried to drain the wetlands and make a go of farming there...with much failure, ...and what a struggle it was to finally convince the owners of the land, locals, and federal government to turn this into a FWA. I guess after they started turning it back into wetlands, the bird migrations thru there have been fabulous. One of these days, I may have to make the trip down there.
