Welcome to the boards mikehaney. I dont understand your question?!?
Mike ... if you're asking "how do you read/interpret what you see on a fish finder" ... then you'll have to tell us WHICH unit you have !! There's so many different units, and 4 different scanning types (2d - DI - SI - 360deg) ... and they all are telling the same story, just in different ways and/or different coverage areas.

Unimap is the Humminbird equivalent of Lowrance Basemap. It is a very basic map which is useful for little more than finding the lake. It isn't useful for fishing or boating.
Unimap is no longer used in the present HB units...
HB now uses Contour XD for the base map....
Contour XD lakes entailed....Humminbird: America
Lakes not listed will have lake boundaries only..

I just bought a 597ci HD DI and was looking at both Lakemaster and Navionics and neither one has any of the lakes I fish.
Looks like I'm stuck with using the Unimap
